Nothing signals the end of summer quite like the symphonic wailing of cicadas! And grasshopers and crickets... and gnat clouds that lie in wait perfectly at mouth-height. Going on walks starts to become unpleasant. But finding cicada shells is always pretty fun. When it was really rainy earlier in the season, I would count the fairy rings that I'd pass. Now the mushrooms are all dead and dried up, along with all of the worms that washed up on the sidewalk.
Ok, enough about the weather.
I finished two faceups recently. And actually, I'm quite satisfied with the results this time! As usual there are things I would have liked to have done a little better. But I don't see these minor flaws as shortcomings of my abilities this time. I can also finish a faceup much more quickly than I used to be able to. Or rather, there are more days in between when the first layer of sealant and the final spots of gloss, because I'm giving more time for the sealant and paint to completely dry and settle. But the amount of time I spend actively applying paint is shorter. It's a little weird because I'm just now realizing that patience is a big contributor to the end result, and it's important to not try to rush through or work hastily. I know it seems like that should be common sense, but I had to remind myself several times to just chill out and leave it for tomorrow. I don't know why I have to convince myself that not everything has to be done right now right now!!!, it's exhausting and more often than not, illogical. Sitting down to do something creative should not be triggering my flight or fight but it seems that sometimes it just does lmao
I gave her two layers of lashes
I gave him a cutie mole
I didn't get around to remaking mouth parts so just use your imagination that he has teeth. I also somehow completely flubbed the cheek blush, objectively the easiest part of any faceup, so I'm going to cover it up with some bandaids. Well I can't wait to give him a new repaint anyway because there are some other techniques I want to try. A couple of faceups ago, for Astilbe, I tried doing a gradient eyeliner, and I think I'll give it another go. It's difficult to control the wetness of the paint so that the linework is clean but also blends seamlessly. White highlights can be used to clean up edges, especially around eyelashes and eyeliner, but I decided I don't actually like adding white to faceups much because while the end result might look nice in dollfoto, the illusion and trickery is a little distracting in real life. I start pondering about why my doll might have white eyelashes. Well, I like a cute and simple faceup! Even lip lines are too much detail for me. But I think there is still much to explore in what I both enjoy doing and what I enjoy looking at.
I've also been working on a clow card fortune telling page, which is very much still a WIP, and I think I'll move it to a subdomain. It's adapted from translations by moonlitunderground (archived link), which eventually got converted to PDF that's been sitting on my computer for quite a while. I'm not really sure how or when I came across the fortune telling guide, but it's been longer than I've even had physical deck of clow cards. I used to do it with a regular deck of playing cards! It's quite fun. I figured I'd like to be able to do readings without actually having to dedicate myself to proper study, and that turned into just simulating the whole thing virtually. In theory the code for it could have been relatively simple but I decided to be a just a little ambitious. I'm not sure if I'll try doing the Weekly Reading, or change the Daily Reading so that you can only draw one card once a day... but anyway please try to break it, and if you can, let me know how you've done it.
Resinpilled Dollcel is just about all assembled and ready to be shipped, those with preorders will be contacted shortly. It's also photocard time, so if there are any specific requests let me know no later than a week from now.
Lastly, general life stuff. I got the chance to go to the beach with my grandma. When I was little I spent many summers with her, and because the beach is only about an hour away from her house, she used to drive us there. There was one of those meat-oriented middle of nowhere restaurants along the way, and we would stop and get sausage. I don't eat meat anymore and now my grandma can barely drive at all, but it's not summer without a short day trip! It was too hot to really enjoy the beach though... all I managed to do was get sunscreen in my hair, and I accidentally got my skirt all wet. My grandma can't walk long distances or be out in the heat as much as she used to either. So not much time was spent in the ocean or even on the sand! Most of my family seems to have an affinity for water but it turns out I don't even own a swimsuit. Oh well! It was nice to hang out with grandma again. She keeps making end of life comments. Even though she's otherwise healthy, I want to spend as much time with her as I can while she's still around! Please give your grandmother (or mother) a call today and let her know you love her.
