Late October really has to be the perfect time to travel. Since I went to the opposite end of the country, I had to pack a lot of sweaters which is difficult for my small suitcase. But if you can manage that, it's the ideal time!
This trip was way more stressful than it should have been, at the fault of no one but my travel companion who managed to lose her phone in the first two hours of arriving and turning it into everyone's problem. It was a valuable trip for me, because I managed to have fun even while having to deal with it!
Despite the city being very dirty (I even saw a few subway rats!), the air was crisp and fresh. The leaves stay a perpetual green-brown where I live, so it was so nice to see such a colorful Fall! And the leaves actually fell! I kicked around so many leaf piles. I ate the best salad I've ever had. It rained one of the days me and my Normal and Reasonable friend went off on our own. We stepped in a puddle and soaked our shoes and socks! We had to hurry and buy rainboots, but it was surprisingly difficult to find a store that was selling them. Our cheap umbrellas kept collapsing onto our heads, doing nothing to repell the rain from ruining our shoes even more. We must have walked up and down the shopping street 5 or 6 times. The situation we got ourselves into was so absurd that the more audible the squishing of the socks in our shoes became, the harder we were laughing at ourselves. Eventually we succeeded and could finally splash around in the puddles. It was a highlight of the trip for me.
Also, I really love riding trains. They're a little dirty but it's so pleasant to stare out the window while the train car jostles you around, and wonder what the people around you are doing with their day. The underground is less exciting, but I'd like to take a long train ride somewhere someday. Walking is very nice too. It's probably not as nice when it's snowing, but just being able to get anywhere you want with your own two legs is so amazing! I didn't mind that the nearest train stop was 30 minutes away, I didn't even think about taking the bus. I want to start walking more often again even if the sidewalks here are short and everything is an eyesore. Just being able to move between more than two rooms is enough for happiness!
